On April 17, 2025, I hiked the Montgomery Falls trail with my dog, Godfrey, who was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his hips. His brain does not match his body because he still thinks he can do anything. So I picked this trail because it is relatively easy with no scrambling for hi. It was a beautiful clear morning, 60-degrees, and blue skies. Perfect for a hike.
Near the beginning of the trail there was a water crossing that presented a problem. The water level was much higher than the last time I was here so I had to go upstream to find a crossing. Luckily there was a giant tree that had fallen over the stream. Godfrey crossed easily, but I had to tight rope it across. Further up the trail I took a wrong turn briefly, and it seemed parts of the trail were a bit washed out. Could have been from Hurricane Helene last year? Who knows. Godfrey managed inclines better than me, despite his condition. It’s nice to be born with four wheel drive.
We reached the falls but stayed at the top to avoid the scramble down. Because the trail is relatively short we continued on past the falls. The trail narrows and gets blocked by downed trees after less than 10 minutes, so we turned back. Godfrey in a miracle of all miracles actually rested willingly for the first time. I guess he is feeling his arthritis more than he lets on.
On the way back, we heard small explosions most likely from nearby Camp Merrill, a military base. I had cross the high water stream again, with me on the log and Godfrey scrambling just a bit. The final incline to the Jeep was tough but manageable. Godfrey did slow down quite a bit at the end. He was actually matching my pace which doesn’t happen with him. He’s usually up the trail a bit, even at the end of a long hike. Age comes for us all I guess.
